When we married 3 years ago, my husband and I planned a modest honeymoon to a beach town in the next state. Unfortunately, my husband's grandfather was extremely ill at the time of the wedding. As we packed to leave the morning after the wedding, we received word that he had passed away. So we did not get the chance to go away. And the hotel refused to honor our request for a refund on the honeymoon package.

We made a vow to each other to have honeymoon A.S.A.P. For three years, we have scrimped and saved to afford a trip to New Orleans, where we met during Mardi Gras in college. This seemed like the year we'd go since we are planning to have a baby next year and won't really be able to get away so easily or justify an extravagant vacation. Now, my husband wants to give all our honeymoon savings to his brother "Dwayne" who is trying to save yet another failed business. My husband argues that we aren't newlyweds anymore. I think it's not only unfair, but throwing good money after bad. Dwayne has wasted $90,000 in get rich schemes and businesses that never get off the ground. If he doesn't get the money from us, he'll "borrow" it from my mother-in-law (which is why my husband wants to be the one to make the loan. Which I know we'll never see again.)

Am I being unreasonable?

Sounds like you would be throwing that honeymoon money down a rathole. Both your husband and his brother should be slapped, just for being ignorant. Ray Charles could see this is a shady deal. Hope it all works out for you. You have my sympathy. Good Luck!!!!

You're not being unreasonable at all. You are more than entitled to a honeymoon after waiting three years, and I imagine that some of the money you have saved up came out of your pocket in the first place. I know that when you are married you agree to share what you own, but I don't think your husband should make the sole decision to give the whole lot including your contributions to his loser brother. Perhaps, if your husband is really refusing to budge then a compromise could be made, whereby some of the money is given to your brother in law and the rest used to pay for your honeymoon. However, if your husband is being this pigheaded and unromantic about a honeymoon you have deserved for three years then maybe it is time to take a long hard look at your marriage. Good luck!

No, you're right. However, if your husband absolutely insists on lending the money, then see a lawyer. Have him/her write a contract that spells out the terms - amount loaned, interest, payments (weekly, monthly), and any collateral.
In these economic times, you have to cover your butt!

You are NOT unreasonable at all. If he gives that money to his loser/failure of a brother DIVORCE HIM! That would be a huge slap in the face to you. The next thing you know, you have a kid and he's giving the kids college fund to his brother. Take a stand, and let us know what happenes. Good luck!

I feel for you, honey. My husband and I never got a honeymoon because his dear sweet mother (read clinging) could never spare him from the family farm for a week, even though we oferred to pay for an extra ranch hand. When Tildy finally passed, I thought we'd have our chance. But my husband said honeymoons were for young folks. What I didn't know was that he was planning to leave me for a cheap waitress in town.
