My 13 year old son recently attended a two week ALL MALE overnight camp for the first time.
Some of the behavior by a particular 21 year old councilor seems disturbing.

According to my son, His cabin councilor walked around in a bikini for several days straight and then changed into tights with army boots, no shirt and a pink cowboy hat. He sported that getup for a couple of days.
He changed in front of the other 13 year old boys and (unintentionally or not) exposed himself for a minute or two.
Certain staff members of this all male camp belonged to "the jiffy lube" club and would occasionally leave the boys in the cabin with the "straight" councilor to attend "meetings" that would last for 3 or more hours.

I do not know and not sure I want to know what these "jiffy lube" meetings entailed.

Is this normal camp/staff behavior that goes on or is this obsene? Should I contact the camp director? Am I an alarmist? Are most overnight camps gay like this????

p.s. The boys and the councilor listened to N' sync and backstreet boys.. is this GAY????

My kids and before them myself always went to summer camp. NEVER have I heard of such a thing but then again we always went to co-ed camps that varied from 4-8 weeks; usually up in NY state but also in NC so next time you should do your homework. Their are several campfinders type entities that weed out poor camps.

Well, I thought I had..This is an international program..ymca..Camp Burgess in sandwich, ma.

It has been around for 65 years and I even have a couple of friends that attended when they were young.

I looked online extensively for any bad reports of the place.....none!!! I even visited the open house!!!

They must have been on their best behavior. The camp itself is a wonderful program, it was just the strange actions of a couple of councilors that spoiled the barrel for my son.

Should I contact the director?

Did your son have access to a telephone? If he is old enough to go away to a two week camp (that you knew little about) than he, if he was freaked out be this place, should have called you to come pick him up a.s.a.p. Didn't you learn anything with all of the press about priest and boys? Same thing here. When left to their own devices, perverts will always find a way to get to their prey. Stick to co-ed camps, and check it out prior to the summer. And yes, report this behavior to the camp management, the local police department and any state agency that will listen to you. At least your son told you about this. I'm sure there were many boys that went home scared or confused by this and will say nothing to their parents.

Our postings must have overlapped at about the same time this morning! I can't believe this was at Camp Burgess! My neighbors have sent there kds there and they had a blast and couldn't wait to go back! Never a word about anything this bizarre. You're right, they have been around forever and have a great reputation. You MUST report the sicko's though. Maybe they should go back to P'Town where they belong!

Kids were allowed to write letters, but not use the phone.
Unfortunately, my son didn't start talking until the next day.
At first, I didn't know what to think. I wasn't sure if the bikini and tights thing was a joke...I was confused.
Every day after my son came home he would come out with more stories that baffled my mind.

Well, I thought I had done my homework about the place.
I searched like a feind for any bad press or blogs about the place, and heard great things about it.
That really hit my heart when you said I hadn't researched enough. I feel like I abandoned him in a bad place without a care.
I wrote every day and even drove to the camp three times to bring a "requested" item that he had "forgotten" (really to observe or spy) on the camp to some degree, just to see how things really worked.

During my "spy" sessions, I didn't see anything unusual.
I really wish he didn't have to go through this strange experience..it has curbed him from ever wanting to return.

I wish there was a way I could have known, and I am glad there is someone out there who has attended camp that is telling me this is not normal. Thank you

I'm sorry, my intention was not to make you feel bad. From what you've written, you covered all of your bases. Plus visiting. What more could be done short of bunking in with your son! Other than this weirdo, did you son have fun? Make some new friends? Learn something new? If so than all is not lost. I have a 14 year old too and he and his friends are working as CIT's this year at Zoo Camp. Next year they can apply for the jobs at Zoo Camp that pay. It's not "away" camp, but fun just the same.

Best of luck, I hope your communication with the camp about this ntes some results for you. Take care.

Thank you, yes. My son did learn new things and genuinely enjoyed the program itself.

I did contact the camp director who informed me that it was okay for the councilors to change in the cabins with the boys, and that the bikini was part of "dress up" that all the cabin members did. My son has a VERY different story..no one but this one councilor dressed this way.

Basically the executive director told me that everything was normal and fine and that my son was misintepreting.
in other words "prove it"

I figured they would back their own as any admission of this type of "creepy behavior" would be a big black eye.

I guess camp isn't for us if this type of dress and behavior is perfectly acceptable to their standards.

Wow! You're right, they're not going to back pedal on what they said. Very strange...maybe you should run this by Howie Carr and let him blow the lid off their little "dress-up" sessions!
