I think that naturally most people have the potential to develop feelings for either sex, but in an oppressive society it takes either negative life experience (such as growing up in loveless marriage) or strong sense of personal liberation for people to break from the norm (this may explain why homosexuals are statistically more likely to be at risk of drug abuse/suicide).
hormones change the way people behave and differences in male and female behaviour can result in a yin and yang effect, however, personality is due to more then just hormones so people may find that balance with others of the same sex.
Throughout history societies attitudes towards homosexual activity have been changeable (consider the Greeks for example) and generally the only reason people have turned against it is because of speculation that transmission of disease marks the act as sinful and deserving of punishment.
In an age where as many straight couples practise anal sex, where we can use protection and have the knowledge to reduce the risks involved, there is no reason such negativity/fear should still exist.
Religions can sometimes encourage small mindedness because they often lead people by fear, creating prejudice rather then instaling a true sense of morality and deeper respect for human life.
How we behave sexually is at best a reflection of our love to one another, a mirror to the soul, at worst can also represent the worst aspects of our personality. Understanding our own sexual behaviour can give us a unique opportunity to better ourselves and develop emotionally.
Society does need to encourage healthy relationships built on mutual respect, but most religions treat sex as an addictive and destructive impulse that needs to be limited and controlled. I feel this is because they underestimate and undervalue the empathy that lies within all of use regardless of religious belief.
Generally I think that prejudice towards homosexuals is due to primitive fear and were it not for the need for procreation, heterosexual couples would find themselves suffering the same accusations of immorality and impurity.
very well put A+
It's annoying to see written over and over again on this website: "I'm not gay, but...", generally leading to "What should I do?" The guy's attracted to another man and feels like suicide. Other recurring irritants are where someone says, "So you're a faggot?" and then gets the story teller to suck his cock; or when someone says they've been raped and then says but they didn't mind it, etc etc. It all points to the US in particular being mightily fucked up about sex.
