I have been brought up in the Moslem faith. My parents to the best of my knowledge have practiced their religion as closely as common sense will permit in any civilised Western society. Our religion states that we must not eat pork, a man should never wear gold, alcohol is not permitted, women must be covered in public etc. etc.
When is somebody going to wake up to realise that the ground rules were laid down when there were no refrigerators to prevent the pork from becoming going bad and becoming contaminated quickly? (This at best would prevent you from going to work and at worst would kill you)Alcoholic drinks were produced by the side of the mud road or in someones tent, so were very likely to contain the kind of impurities that would at best prevent you from going to work, or maybe kill you. Gold is and has always been considered a display of wealth. ``Dont wear the gold trinket that you bought with the extra money that I am paying you Mustafa, the other blokes will want a pay rise too!" And while I am here ..... it might be a good idea to keep that wife of yours under wraps buddy, if the other blokes don't see her they won't fancy her will they? That way she will never have the chance to find out just how inadequate you are in bed will she? And remember... no pork or booze Mustafa, I don't want you being off sick.

Technically, these type of rules played the same role in every religion. Today they are practiced for 2 reasons: 1) it helps to distinguish members from other religions (we do this and they do that) and 2) it shows piety.

I am Jewish and my husband is Catholic. We are both fairly observant. That means that we keep a kosher home (for me) and during Lent, we do not eat meat on Fridays (for him). We're both well-educated people (we both have master's degrees) who understand that such laws don't have the same function as they played for our ancestors. But they aren't major inconveniences and they help us feel closer with G-d.

All you religious fanatics are a bunch of kooks. You can't stand on your own 2 feet. You have to hang with a bunch of goofs, who, poke little boys in the butt for sport and get away with it for years. Wake up and smell the roses folks. It's shysterism at it's best and those of you who fall for it deserve everything you get. I just feel sorry for the children who are getting molested everyday by a bunch of hypocrits and queers. My confession would be that i'm dead set against catholisism and all it stands for and it should be abolished from the face of the earth. Where do they get off doing this shit to the children and then you people still attend church, like nothing happened. You should all be ashamed of yourselves and God-Damned to Hell for all eternity. When you make your contribution at your church, you are contributing to the sodomy of children. How can you stand yourself. It's the most pathetic atrocity of all time and i want no part of it. Wake up.

HISTORY:
An accounting of failure, iniquity, errors of judgement, character flaws, bloody cruelties and obscene missteps. Human beings are such low things. What greater support of atheism is there, than the repulsive nature of those scraps of flesh and weakness alledgedly created in God's image? Or perhaps there is a master deity and he's an incompetent fool like everyone else. Would'nt that be a hoot.

Religion, if you really think about it, is a really a form of communism. One could even say that Jesus Christ was a communist. Think about it: Just like communism, religious figures basically tell you what you're going to feel when you discover Jesus, Buddha, whatever, when you're going to feel it, and what you are feeling. Damn near anyone, except for maybe someone with some serious cognitive problems, can tell you what they feel, so why does someone need to tell you how you are going to feel? They tell you not to believe any other religion or else you're going to burn eternally (i.e. propaganda again). And instead of doing everything for the state and for your comrades, you do it for God and Jesus/Mohammed/whoever, and you owe everything you have to God and Jesus/whoever, etc., just like communism believes. Just like communism, religion makes you live in fear because if you break the so called "commandments" or rules, you're going to punished. Some of these commandments and rules are really stupid and do not apply to 21st century today. It may have worked 2,500 years ago with a large group of uneducated people, but they just do not work today. Religion, like Communism, is a great theory, but it just doesn't work. And let man get his hands on so called holy scriptures, and watch the disturbed warping of a so called religion begin. And I may burn "eternally in hell" for saying all this but if you think about it, hell is a total contradiction of the new testament of the christian bible, because jesus apparently died on the cross for everyone's sins (There's nothing specifying which sins he did and didn't die for, so that means all of them are forgiven), so why would someone who loves you so much put you in hell forever if he forgives you? Again, more fear and propaganda to get you to fall in line with the rest of the fearful sheep. Communism, Relgion, they're one in the same.

I'm glad someone could put it in words without flaming or massive put downs. I don't like religion just for the simple fact that it's caused so many wars and dissagreements between people. I still think you can believe in a higher being without having a religion.

OY VEI! (I am not Jewish but like that saying) Talks of religion, yadda yadda yadda. Remember one thing people: You can do ANYTHING religiously, such as flip off your neighbor, kick the cat, beat the dog, etc. What I am looking for is spirituality. I agree that Catholism is a crock AND the biggest cult there is out there. What kind of "religion" has you talking to a man in between you and your higher power? What kind of "religion" has you praying to statues, aka inanimate objects? Of course, Lutherans are not much better. I prefer to call them "Catholic Lite" The only reason I know these things is I was baptized Catholic and seen some of their rituals and frankly, it scares me. I have since denounced them. I, then attended a funeral with a friend that was Lutheran and those imbeciles are about as bad as the Caths. Forget it all, do your own thing and pray to your higher power. peace, love and peaches, baby!
