I Goaded Him; I Embarrassed Her
One of my best friends was in town for work and opted to stay with my wife and I in lieu of a hotel. He treated us to dinner and drinks as a thanks and he got sad drunk. Near the end of dinner her broke down and admitted that his wife had a miscarriage. I didn't even know they'd been pregnant, and as it turned out, it was an early loss. It all felt very heavy, so I guided the three of us to a bar after dinner. I don't think anyone is good at digesting that kind of news, but my wife is far more empathetic and cool than I am and she kind of handled the whole situation despite getting drunk in the process. My natural response was to make jokes and I talked about how he used to leave magnum condoms dr**ed in our bathroom trashcan in college as some kind of pride orproof he'd landed some strange.
We got home. He showered. My wife and I chatted on the couch. Mind you I was a little drunk, but in a better state than my wife. She told me my buddy mentioned that he and his wife had basically stopped fooling around after the news. I said something about that being sad, but I was sure they'd figure it out. I reminded my wife that this was the guy that not-so-discretely let his college roommates see his used condoms. She coyly questioned me about condoms vs. magnums as if she was THAT innocent. The guest bath where my friend was showering was right off the living room and when he emerged in a towel, I called him over.
I goaded him. I embarrassed her. He asked for music to fit the mood. It was harmless flashing until he got into the music and put his foot up on the back of the couch and obscured my view of my wife with his towel dr**ed around him. It was all in good fun. He wrapped up and my wife had her face in her hands and was giggly. I didn't say anything else until I asked them to stop. He undid his towel again, obscuring my view. I remember seeing her eyes glance over the towel at me for approval. Maybe for forgiveness? I didn't see anything, really, but I know what was going on.
