I watched a show last night where there was a hidden camera in a taxi. The driver wasan actor making racial slurs. The point was to see what way most people reacted to his chattering about blacks, jews and so on.
Some of the people agreed with the driver, such as Arabs should be sent back to "AliBaba" and so forth.
When the unknowing passengers got out of the car they were interviewed by the host of the show and questioned about their "racism and bigotry" most were made to either feel badly or eat thier words, others stood up for their right to their opinions.

While I believe that people should be treated according to their merits, I also beleive that people absolutely have a right to their opinions. If people don't like blacks...SO WHAT...if people don't like Asians...SO WHAT!!
Being entitled to and voicing your opinion is freedom of speech. Why must we all feel the SAME WAY about everything????
I would be horrified if a black man or woman was beaten or treated badly just because of their race, but at the same time I am entitled to want to stick with "birds of a feather" and have the right to like and not like whatever I choose.
Why do people feel that we all must "conform" to meet politically correct social standards in our opinions for fear of ridicule. In a way that is no better than bigots and racist themselves!!
Either learn to like and accept blacks,Asians, Hispanics or you will be socially ostracized is the general message.

I beleive you must TREAT all people with respect, unless they have wronged you, but to force people into accepting all cultures and races unconditionally into your heart when you feel otherwise is just as wrong.

If I see a young black man that is an upright and dignified person, I would not think of him any differently from any other neighbor. When I see a thug looking young black man, swearing and being ignorant I immediately think "nigger". Before you get your panties in a bunch I would absolutely feel the same way if I saw a white young man acting and looking the same way...I would think "white trash".
The problem in my case is this.
I grew up in a middle class ALL white community.I had never even seen a black,Asian,Hispanic person until I was about 13 when I went to Jr. High. When I did meet a black family, I was scared to death. They talked different, were loud, swore and were just scary to me. Later we found out that 2 members of this family went to jail for drugs..fighting ect. That has been my only firsthand impression of blacks. I had a preconceived notion already at 13. It didn't help that I grew up with my grandparents who were haters of most races other than Northern European.

I feel slightly guilty about my feelings and opinions because I know the notion of all races getting along is intended for the "greater good" of man.
However, I am still afraid of black people. I only like blacks on an individual basis. I don't like Mexicans when they come to my country and all you hear is ..abada abada, and I don't understand them. I don't really know many Asians, but never met one I didn't like. I like Jews, every Jew I have ever known I have LOVED. I don't know any Arabs, but one and he is a great guy.

So, I guess it's not different races I hate, but the subcultures within ALL races that I am afraid of...BAD PEOPLE.
I am still entitled to my opinion..I should be able to say whatever I choose, even if it is not in keeping with todays social acceptance rules.

If I offend you with my opinions, do not befreind me. If you don't like the clothes I wear...well, you're not wearing them. If I must accept you in your cultural diversity opinion, you must accept my "birds of a feather" opinion. Who is to say whose opinion is right or better than another.

Everybody is trying to put a lid on people that have an opinion that may be offensive to others. You can't stifle me with your opinion. I have a right to feel think and say what I want even if it offends.

Imagine what the world would be like if we all looked felt and acted the same....AN ANT COLONY! I beleive in keeping the integrity of race to a large degree. It makes the world more interesting.

This country was founded apon a notion that people were allowed to feel and think in a way that they choose even if it was not in correct social standings of their day.
You like this...I like that....you feel this...I feel that.
You cannot impose your feelings and opinions apon me, just as I cannot upon you. That is why our religions are diversified. I will kost likely feel this way until I die.

Yes, I agree. While I think violent crimes based on racism are disgusting, I don't mind if someone doesn't like a certain race. As you said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

"This country was founded apon a notion that people were allowed to feel and think in a way that they choose even if it was not in correct social standings of their day."
Actually, it was founded to dominate the world and elevate the English people to a master race status if possible.
Check out a detailed life of Ben Franklin if you don't believe me.
The documentary biography on P.B.S. a couple of years ago is a good source also.

The problem with the "I'm entitled to my opinion" view is that it elevates principle over practice.
The principle of a free society is good, it's just not being practiced and never has been.
When a person thinks a certain way, he or she is inclined to act that way when the proper circumstances arise.
It's the purpose of school, church, the military, or any system of practical indoctrination to force a person to think a certain way so that when the proper circumstances occur he or she will act in a predictable way.
If a person is left to develope his or her own thinking on race or war, then he or she will not necessarily react properly at certain times.

I'm sure this sounds totalitarian, but it's simply impossible for 6+ billions of us to live and act the way a few thousands living in small groups - our original situation - did.
Our society can't take the chance that you will not pass the ammunition to your fellow soldier in combat just because he's Hispanic or Black and you don't get along with same.
You have to react predictably, without thinking in such situations.
Ditto police confrontations, medical emergencies, etc.

If you really don't want to face this sort of indoctrination, then I suggest you move to a monocultural region or country.

If you think that you have free speech then try working in the health profession.......If you think that you live in a free country then try listening to Noam Chomsky...(by the way, the above writer is well educated and mostly correct)

I understand the point the replier is making, but I do not feel that if I do not conform my way of thinking to fit the acceptability of others that I will act inappropriately in specific situations. I am a fairly well rounded and educated person. Uh, Ben Franklin was born well after the Pilgrims stepped onto the rock. I understand that England used this land firstly to trade and secondly to acquire. I would absolutely follow a hispanic, white, asian or black platoon leader if I had respect for them.On an individual basis I will respect anybody who is honest and kind.

I am just sick of politically correct!!! Enough already!!
Can't say "Christmas" without saying Kwanzaa or Hannukah, can't pray in school..the list goes on and on!!!

When will we ever be entitled to have an opinion we won't be made to feel guilty about? Why must we love and embrace all whether we truely feel so or not???
Why must society dictate how, when and why I voice my personal opinions?? Am I not as entitled to a personal opinion and/or voice them how I see fit???

I understand that a peaceful nation is best for all, I certainly do not feel in any way aggressive toward anyone, but why do I have to feel and think YOUR(politically correct) way..or else???

Amen, brother.
Aren't all crimes "hate crimes"? You see another man in bed with your wife, you hate him, and therefore, beat the crap out of him. You don't really care at that moment what color he is.
Hate is hate and the only color is sees is red.

*clap* My thoughts exactly. I also believe in freedom of speech and opinion etc. Your point on Political Correctness and statements of how bad it is, if you think it is bad you should try living in New Zealand.

The Maoris are constantly trying to force their culture upon us. When I started High School in year 9 (13 years old) we had a powhiri (welcome) that comprised mostly of Maori men talking in their language and waving sticks. This went on for 2-3 hours and bored me and fellow students out of our skulls in the hot sun. Also this year when we had the powhiri for our new deputy principal the same thing happened and went on for 45 minutes, and I heard people behind me muttering things like "shut up" and "shut the fuck up" etc, etc as there were only about 30 out of around 860 who could hope to understand it.

A group of local Maori down in the Waikato stopped a roading project asking for money so they could bless the site to get rid of a "taniwha" (evil spirit). I think they even got away with it.

Another infringement on freedom of speech is that at powhiris in government departments the women were told they must sit at the back behind the men because it was tradition. Those women who spoke out were branded racists and their jobs were put on the line and they were incarcerated in the media. I am not anti - maori, I respect their rights. All I want is that they don't make us sit through something we can't understand for hours on end and they respect some of our rights too.
