I was in the Salvation Army getting books to read, and there was this couple in there that looked really poor, ex: dirty clothes, hair, etc. They had a baby in there, and I saw them switch the baby's ratty shoes it had on with some newer ones...They saw me watching so they moved their buggy so I couldn't see, they looked really embarrassed. I just looked away. Later on, the guy had a clean shirt on too. :|. I didn't want to tell on them and didn't..it's just one of those things where you don't know what to do. Was I right not telling on them or not?

That's a hard situation...if that should happen again, I'd go up to the manager/ clerk and give her or him $20.00, and have them tell the family that they just "won an attendance prize for 20 dollars in merchandise."
Or, You could just tell the family, "I know how hard it can be to make ends meet...how about I buy thise shoes for your child?"
In our local paper they print crime reports. It's hard for me to paint a person a criminal that gets caught taking baby oral- jel, formula, or diapers, as compared to the beer and cigarrette thieves.

Hmm, on one hand a criminal record seems like a terrible thing to earn for trying to provide for your child. On the other hand, once the police were involved, this family might have gotten the social services they obviously needed. On our block, there was a really messed up family Mom had six kids under 10. Plus she had two teenager daughters with kids of their own. 13 year old had a 2 month old baby. The 17 year old had 3 kids! They were all dirty and always sick. Around Christmas when UPS and the post office was making a lot of deliveries, we started having stuff disappear out of the mail of the houses where kids lived. Naturally, it was hard to narrow down the culprits. They had set up the packages under the tree for gifts for the kids. Mom and the 17 year old spent Christmas in the County lock-up, but all the other kids went into foster care and started doing really well. The 17 year old had to get a job after that and eventually they got the dad paying child support.
